Creative Uses for Plant Saucers: Bee Watering Station

clear plant saucers
Plant saucers are the perfect shallow dish to create a bee watering station in your yard.

Plant saucers are important for plant health, but there are also many creative ways to use them in your home. One option for upcycling your plant saucers is to use them to create a bee watering station in your yard.

Just like us, bees need water to survive. They use water to help thin out their honey and keep their hives cool. Bees typically try to find a water source as close to home as possible. Yet, the nearest water may be contaminated. Also, deep water, like you would find in a pond or stream, can cause bees to drown, as they can’t swim. You can help the bees in your local area by setting up a bee watering station outside your home.

How to Make Bee Watering Stations Out of Plant Saucers

Making a bee watering station from a plant saucer is actually quite easy. Here’s how you can do it with just a few simple items.

What You’ll Need:

Here’s what you’ll need to create your bee watering station:

  • Plant saucer
  • Pebbles or marbles
  • Water
  • Planter (optional)

Instructions:

Plant saucers are perfect to use for bee watering stations because they are shallow. What you will do is take the saucer and fill it with pebbles or marbles. These give the bees a surface to land on so they don’t drown while attempting to take a drink. Then, you simply fill the saucer with water until it almost reaches the top of the pebbles or marbles. Just fill or replace the water once a day to keep it fresh and safe for bees. You might even notice other visitors, like butterflies, enjoying a nice drink in your yard.

If you want to add a little bit of pizzazz to your watering station, consider gluing the watering station saucer on top of a planter. You can buy a decorative planter or you can choose a plain terracotta one and paint the decorations on yourself.

Why Use Plastic Plant Saucers?

For your bee watering station, you might be wondering if you can use clay saucers instead of plastic ones. While this is an option, we recommend using plastic because it retains less heat. Clay and ceramic tend to heat up and hold onto that heat for a long time, which can cause the water inside your bee watering saucer to be hot. The hotter the water, the higher the risk for algae and germ growth. Heavy duty plastic, on the other hand, can help reduce this risk by keeping the water cooler.
